Foundations

Founded in Uganda during COVID-19 by John Ssentamu in 2019

Katwadde Aquaculture Farm was founded in Uganda by John Ssentamu in 2019. The farm was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools were closed, giving Ssentamu the opportunity to pursue his passion for fish farming.

Agriculture was one of the few activities allowed during the pandemic, allowing Ssentamu to focus on setting up the farm on abandoned land.

The goal was to improve community livelihoods through sustainable fish farming practices and to create a model that integrates education and tourism.

Practices

Utilising permaculture, hydropower, and innovative water pumping without fuel

Katwadde Aquaculture Farm employs various sustainable practices and innovations. The farm uses permaculture techniques to promote sustainable agriculture and generates its own electricity through hydropower. It has a unique setup for water pumping that does not rely on fuel, enhancing its sustainability.

The farm integrates these practices into its operations, aiming to be a model of sustainable agriculture and community development.

These innovations attract local and international visitors who come to learn about the farm's methods and organization.

Engagement

Serving as a hub, offering hands-on learning and community support

Katwadde Aquaculture Farm serves as a community hub, supporting around 100 people through various activities. It offers hands-on learning opportunities in sustainable practices, fish farming, and permaculture.

The farm attracts local and international visitors, including students, fish farmers, civil servants, and government ministers, who come to learn about its innovative practices.

By providing education and promoting community involvement, the farm enhances local knowledge and economic prospects, making it a respected center for learning and sustainable development.

Adaptability

Facing high costs, market issues; adapting with permaculture, local training

The farm faces several challenges, including the high cost of fish feed, fluctuating market prices, and the need for technical expertise in power generation and hatchery management.

To address these challenges, the farm has focused on permaculture to solve feeding problems and has chosen more cost-effective fish species like catfish over tilapia.

Additionally, the farm aims to reduce reliance on external experts by training local people to maintain and operate the systems in place, ensuring sustainable and continuous operations.

Replicating

Aiming for a replicable model integrating permaculture, hospitality, local lifestyle learning

The future vision for Katwadde Aquaculture Farm includes creating a replicable model that integrates permaculture, hospitality, and education.

The farm aims to become a multifaceted community enterprise, providing hands-on learning opportunities in sustainable practices and fish farming. Future plans involve further developing the farm as a tourism center to attract visitors and enhance its role in community development.

The farm also seeks to improve its technical expertise, particularly in power generation and hatchery management, to ensure continuous and sustainable operations.
