Julia Steketee

My story so far 

I'm a designer, a maker, and an artist of craft. With formal training and professional experience in furniture design and art fabrication, I’ve developed a fluency in many materials and methods of making.

My artistic research and practice are based on the geometries and spatial qualities of language, alphabets, and cultural symbology. I see the practice of making as a means of communication and an active expression of our values. I explore craft practices through material interaction and understanding.

In more recent years, I have shifted my focus to local, bio-based, waste-based material exploration and research. In 2024, I co-founded BAGACEIRA, a material design studio repurposing agricultural wastes into materials and products for interior design and architecture. I incorporate my deep respect for regenerative practices, natural building techniques, and the principles of the circular economy into this design practice.
